Childhood
Piran was a troubled child due to his parents. They were continuously asking him of tasks from a young age, and therefore excluding him from his common student. Chores must be done efficiently. Clothes must be ironed and washed. Bed must be made. Bin must be emptied. Room must be spotless and organised.

At 14 he was kicked out of his house with little payment, despite all the things he had accomplished for his parents. School was getting too much for him, looking after himself, homework and bills, so he dropped out for a few years and returned at 16, choosing marine biology and education as his electives. Piran tried his best to ignore all his drama and the fact no-one was there for him, trying hard not to show emotion and keep on top of everything.

Mariy
In his last year of school, a new girl by the name of Mariy Nah (pronounced Mary) moved into the class. Piran knew he had finally found someone he truly loved. However, he was too shy for most of the time, until he finally summoned the courage to talk to her.

They became good friends and study partners. Both of them were smart, shared ideals and interests, and this was what drew them together. Mariy liked Piran the more they got to know each other and the more they hung out. Then, finally, on graduation, Piran asked Mariy to the prom-coming.

She said yes.

The Move and Piran's Emotional Turmoil
From there, their relationship escalated. They were now dating and visiting each other often. They kept well in touch, until one day when Piran received a text from Mariy.

She was moving far away, she said. She didn't state where or why. Piran began to panic, sending her countless text messages, emails and phoning her. Shocked and upset, he tried everything.

When he realised she was long gone and he could do nothing... Piran fell into a deep depression. Councilors were useless, help programs did nothing. No-one had a shoulder for him to cry on so he cut himself off from the rest of the world.

Miracle Child
One early afternoon, Piran heard a knock at his front door. Who would bother coming to his house? Everyone thought was haunted, or just plain empty.
He ignored it, coming to the conclusion it was a prank.

Almost two hours later, the knocking continued. A small, sweet voice came through the window.
“Hello? Mr Piran? Are you hooooooome???”
He was a little surprised. Not many people knew his name anymore. Even his parents had probably forgotten him. It was too shrill to be his councilor, and it wasn't like she cared for him anymore.

Annoyed, he leaked out of bed, piling up onto the floor, a bundle of bones, skin and cotton. He helped himself up using the bed, and made it to the door frame while taking a breather. It had been a while since he had left his room.

He cleared his throat, coughing up some flem and spitting it on the floor.
He staggered down the hallway, coughing. Once he had finally made it to the front door he was really annoyed.

He swung it open and glared furiously into the child's face.
WHAT?! WHAT the HELL do you want?!” He scowled.
The little girl smiled at him. She didn't seem to care about his downright rude attitude, his messy bedhead, his snotty nose, his gritty pajamas or the rainbow of crumbs all on his chin. She just smiled.
“Ms Mariy wanted to give this to you.”

Piran blinked for a moment. Was this a joke? Should he believe this juvenile? He was shocked. His stared at the child like a deer in the headlights and sniffled.
Mariy. A whole year had taken him to realise how much he missed the lull of the word. How much he missed Mariy.
Once he came back to himself, he snatched the floral stationary the girl was holding out in her hands and slammed the door in her face. He slid down the door and collapsed onto the wooden floorboards.

Mariy's Return
After pondering on it for a while, Piran finally decided to inspect the letter he was given.

He went to open it, but a small piece of paper fell out as he unfolded it.
It was a newspaper clipping.

In bold letters, it read:
CHILD SEX OFFENDER BROUGHT TO JUSTICE.
20 year old rapist Joshua Piken was finally prosecuted after admitting to over 10 criminal offenses...”

And I photo of a shady young man was above the writing. He seemed familiar to Piran, but he ignored the feeling and began to read Mariy's letter.

A neatly organised set-out was on the page in beautiful cursive.

To my dearest Maxwell,

I don't know how to start this letter, other than I'm sorry. I owe so much to you, and I was such rude person to leave you. I'm so full of grief because of  it...

I am coming back from my cousins' place. I really do regret going there, but if I did not I would most likely never be able to see you again. I had to leave for as long as it would take for Piken to be put away. I know I should have told you, but he's such a scary man, I just... Couldn't. I didn't want you to be put in danger, because your life is much more important than mine.

I'm sorry I didn't come to see you myself, but... I don't want to see the state you are in now. It'll hurt both of us. I'll wait as long as it takes for you to get better and see me again if you decide that's what you want to do.

That cute little girl, who gave you this letter... Her name is Hope. She was one of Piken's many victims. I hope that man burns in hell, but I sincerely hope you do not.

Max, I... I love you. I know you don't love me anymore, but please forgive me fore betraying you like I did... I deserved the pain I felt for leaving you.

With love,
Mariy...”

By the time he had finished reading, tears were welling up in his eyes.

“M-Mariy was.... Mariy was raped...”

His tears dripped onto the fragile paper, warping the words into gibberish.
He threw the paper across the room, but it didn't go far, due to his weak arms.

He was weeping on the floor for hours. He didn't remember when he stopped, but he remembered crying himself to sleep that night.

He woke up in the late evening the next day. He felt somewhat refreshed and ready - but for what?

"For Mariy..." He assured himself.

It was then he decided to make a drastic change for the best. It would be the end of Piran as he knew it and a replacement full of heart to come. He knew he could no longer rot in the cesspit he called "home". What good would that have done for him anyway? It only made him a mere shell of the strong boy he once knew.

It was time for change.

Piran's Transformation
Mariy said she would wait as long as it took... And it payed off.

By the new year, Piran was a new man.

He took himself to the hospital and there got a proper diagnosis. He spent countless weeks in hospital; but he kept telling himself to embrace the end result.
After he was let out, he saw a doctor and he put him on a plan - it took him months to almost fully recover. He needed some medication to take, but other than that, he was on top of his health and happiness. His determination to see Mariy once more was his fuel to fight.

He was ready for her now.

He made a plan to sell his house. The bills were getting too much for him to pay on top of his doctor's and medication. And he didn't have much of a connection to the house, other than the small rain forest behind it.

Once he had the money and supplies, he was off. He knew his neighbours briefly, but he told them he wouldn't know them for too long and he had a partner waiting. He kept their contact, but he was too busy to worry about them.

Seeing Mariy Again
"I'm coming, Mariy...!"
Those were his words as he leaped out of the taxi.
He sped up the driveway, down the bridge and up the steps, pulling to a stop at the front door.
He fixed himself up a little, took a deep breath...

And knocked on the door politely.

A woman looking in her late 40's wearing an apron and cooking mits opened the door.
"Who are you?"

Piran smiled courtly at the woman.
"I am Piran Maxwell. Are you Mariy's mother, by any chance?"

The woman's eyes widened in absolute shock. Her jaw dropped a little, and she scoped Piran.
"Are you su... Are you really Maxwell?!"
"As sure as I'll ever get, ma'am."

She stared at him as if her eyes were about to pop out of their sockets.
"M-M-Mariy...!" She stammered weakly down the stairs in an attempt to call.

Footsteps came from the left side of the house towards the hallway and staircase. They then came hopping up the stairs.

Another, younger woman appeared at the door. It was Mariy.

She had her long, dark brown hair loose down her back and over her shoulders. She had a cookie in one hand, and her other powdered with flour.

She looked at the door way, curious to see who it was. Once she saw him...
She was the happiest she'd ever been in her whole life.

She flung the cookie down the stairs and threw herself into Piran's embrace. He was warm and comforting, and with his arms around her, Mariy felt as if she could do anything.
